Osteoarthritis

Arthritis

Proper spinal alignment is essential for maintaining a healthy spine and preventing the development of painful conditions. If there is trauma to a spinal joint or there is degeneration of the discs that separate the vertebrae, one of the ways your body responds is to try to stabilize the area by forming new bone. Over time, calcium deposits build up, eventually forming abnormal bone growths called “bone spurs” or osteophytes. This arthritic bone spur is the body’s attempt to stabilize the injured joint. If left untreated, the degeneration is also known as “subluxation degeneration¨ and will progressively worsen and can lead to chronic health problems. As the x-rays below show, there is a progressive degeneration that can be stopped or slowed with the proper chiropractic care.

Normal

Correct spinal curves allow for normal spinal movement. Openings between joints allow nerve roots to exit the spine without interference or pinching of nerves. Bone edges are smooth and well defined. Equally spaced discs are a sign of healthy spinal function.

First Phase

Loss of normal curves and misalignment can limit or exaggerate normal range of motion. Ligament and muscle strength is reduced. Even with nerve irritation and soft tissue inflammation, there may be no pain or other obvious symptoms.

Second Phase

Years of accumulated calcium deposits are now visible causing bone spurs that attempt to fuse the dysfunctional joints. The adjacent surfaces are rough and uneven. The instability of the joint is accompanied by constant nerve irritation and disc degeneration.

Third Phase

After years of neglect, complete fusion has immobilized the joint. Blocked nerve openings cause permanent nerve irritation as disc and soft tissue degeneration continues. This irreversible condition is usually associated with other chronic health problems.
